The "Space Shuttle" developed by the U.S. space agency NASA was for a long time the world's only reusable space transportation system. The space shuttle was able to simultaneously deliver 24.5 tons of payload and 7 astronauts into low Earth orbit between 200 and 650 kilometers orbital altitude. The first launch of a space shuttle into space took place on April 12, 1981 with the space shuttle "Columbia".
