The design of the innovative Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey was established in the 1980s, but it was only after a long and complex development process that spanned more than 20 years that delivery to the operational branches of the U.S. Armed Forces began. The Osprey is a tilt-rotor aircraft with large three-blade propellers that enable it to land and take off vertically like a helicopter, providing flight and transfer performance similar to that of a conventional propeller-driven aircraft. Thanks to its twin 6,150-hp Rolls-Royce T406-AD-400 engines, it can reach more than 500 mph in level flight. The U.S. Marine Corps is the aircraft's largest user, taking advantage of the V-22's tactical and transport versatility, particularly for landing support missions. The Osprey participated in its first missions in a war scenario in Iraq in 2008.
