The S.M.79 Sparviero was developed in the 1930s by the Italian company SIAI-Marchetti as a civil aircraft and set important world speed records at the time. It was characterized by its typical three-engine low-wing configuration and had a structure made of wood, canvas and metal. It was later withdrawn in military versions and used extensively by the Regia Aeronautica (Italian Royal Air Force) during the Second World War, particularly in the Mediterranean as a land bomber and later as an effective torpedo bomber. Recognizable by the "hump" behind the cockpit, its three 750 hp Alfa Romeo 126 RC34 radial engines reached a top speed of 430 km/h. Although it was replaced as a bomber by other, more modern aircraft, the "Sparviero" (Sparrowhawk) achieved significant success in torpedo attacks on enemy ships in the hands of skillful crews throughout the conflict.
