Derived from the famous HSS-1 "Seabat" anti-submarine helicopter manufactured by the American Sikorsky company since the mid-1950s, a few years later a version was developed to carry out tactical transport missions: the HUS-1 Seahorse. The helicopter was frequently used by the Marine Corps starting in 1957 and immediately proved reliable and robust. It could carry up to 16 fully equipped men or a load of 1,300 kg. With its Wright R-1820 Cyclone piston engine, the Seahorse reached speeds of up to 200 km/h. Its operating characteristics accelerated its proliferation. It was also used by the U.S. Army (with the acronym H-34), producing an armed version with 7.62 mm-M60 machine guns that was widely used in the first phase of the Vietnam War. The armament of the French version, which took part in the Algerian conflict and was equipped with 3 12.7-mm Browning machine guns and a 20-mm MG 151 cannon, is even heavier.
