A key event of World War II, on June 6, 1944, Allied troops landed in Normandy. This day went down in history as D-Day. The goal was to push back the German occupiers from northern France. After the successful Allied landing, the second front against Hitler's Germany demanded by Stalin was created and the downfall of the Nazis was effectively sealed. By the time of the Normandy landings (Operation Neptune June 1944/Omaha Beach), the concept of invasion by landing craft had been tried and perfected many times (e.g., Operation Jubilee on August 19, 1942) and a large number of specialized ships were available. The most common type of medium landing craft is the (LCM), which was also available in the German Army in the Army and Navy. LCMs can be carried by larger landing craft as deck cargo or in the well deck. The LCM 3 had a carrying capacity of up to 54 tons and could carry a larger vehicle such as a Sherman M4 main battle tank. It was also possible to transport 60 soldiers and 27,000 kg of cargo in the open hold. Therefore, only a maximum speed of 8 knots was possible when loaded. For loading and unloading, the LCM 3 has a bow ramp.
