Our kits of historical cable streetcar model invite you on a journey to the time before the spread of the railroad. Step by step, assemble a detailed replica of a historic streetcar model.

The cable-drawn streetcars are one of the landmarks of San Francisco. The first streetcar of this type ran a London for a short time in 1840. Years later, on August 2, 1873, Andrew Smith Hallidie operated the first cable streetcar in San Francisco on the Clay Street Hill Railroad. And even today, 136 years later, the typical streetcars are an indispensable part of the cityscape.

The system relies on a circulating cable running under the street to pull the cars at a constant speed. The streetcar starts moving when the so-called cable grip is actuated and the cable is tensioned. When the tension is released and the brakes are applied, the streetcar stops. Two fleets are still in operation today.

One operates on the Powell-Hyde and Powell-Mason lines. The other fleet operates on the California Street line. To this belongs the streetcar No. 60, which we have reproduced in our kit. It was built in 1998 by order of the MUNI (San Francisco Municipal Railway) and started operation in 2002.

The car is based on the early models built by John Hammond & Company in 1906 for the California Street Cable Railroad Company. After the April 1906 earthquake and fire, it was built in the new Hammond shops as No. 16 and became MUNI's No. 60 in 1957. In 1968-69 it was renewed in by MUNI Elkton, using the roof and seats of the original.

And in the end, be pleased with a successful streetcar that you can proudly display in your collection.
