In 1829, the operator of the Liverpool-Manchester line held the Rainhill race to determine the best locomotive for the line. Out of the five locomotives that competed, George Stephenson's Rocket emerged as the winner.

This locomotive, which weighed only 4250 kg, had a flame-tube boiler with a blowpipe, which provided a high heat transfer. The boiler was 1.82 m long overall and 1 m in diameter. The inclined cylinders moved the pistons, which were coupled to the 1.44 m diameter drive wheels. A speed of 49 kilometers per hour was achieved. Due to its features, the Rocket was the first locomotive well suited for transporting goods and passengers. It opened a new era in the history of means of transport.
