The B buses were built at Walthamstow as successors to the X models. The Model B had room for 34 passengers, 16 inside and 18 on the upper deck without a roof. It was the first mass-produced bus. In 1911, the first B bus was used to transport passengers. By 1913, 2500 B-buses were in operation. The bus was designed by Frank Searle, who worked as chief engineer at LGOC. The model consists of a wooden frame, steel rims, a worm screw and the chain case. The bus reached a top speed of 16 kilometers per hour, which was above the legal speed limit of 12 kilometers per hour at the time. Some buses even reached speeds of 30-35 kilometers per hour in favorable conditions. 900 of these buses were used to transport British troops during the First World War. The Imperial War Museum in London houses one of these buses, the B 43 model, named after a popular comic book hero of the time, Bill Ole. The London Transport Museum in Covent Garden has a restored original of the B 340.
