Saucy Jack Well Smack - 1836 Well Smacks were fishing boats built with an integral circulating seawater tank. The tank could keep the fish alive for a few days. Around 1830, there were 30-40 fishing boats of this type of vessel in Barking, a suburb of London, which were also called "Fish Pools". Most of the Well Smacks were about 15-18 m long and had a crew of 7 or 8 fishermen.

The "Saucy Jack" was a typical example of this type of vessel. She was built in 1836 in the port town of Gravesend, was about 18 m long and weighed 51 tons. The Saucy Jack was in service for many years and was the last Well Smack to leave Barking in 1880 and was still in service in other ports. Some Well Smack vessels built later in the nineteenth century still fished around Faroe Islands until the 1950s.

Although keeping the catch in the seawater basin was a better method than salting and drying in the wind, there were some disadvantages. Vessels of this type were not very fast, as they had to carry several tons of seawater in the hull, and the additional materials required for the basin added significantly to construction costs.
