Five galleons set sail from the port of Plymouth in England on December 13, 1577, led by Captain Francis Drake's galleon The Pelican.
When the expedition crossed the Strait of Magellan, The Pelican was renamed The Golden Hint by Drake in honor of one of the voyage's sponsors, Sir Christopher Hatton, whose coat of arms included a golden deer.
The Golden Hind is known for its circumnavigation of the globe in 1577 - 1580.
After 40,000 miles, Drake returned to England in 1580 with treasures and conquered lands. In 1581, Queen Elizabeth I awarded him the title of Sir on the deck of the Golden Hind.
